THE ART OF CULTIVATION

Charleston Farmhouse, Sussex, is the place where the artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant settled in 1916. In the course of some 50 years, the house developed into a popular meeting place for the Bloomsbury group of intellectuals and artists. Of these, at least Clive Bell, David Garnett and Maynard Keynes actually lived at Charleston for some time, while Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Edward Morgan Forster, Lytton Strachey and Roger Fry frequented it often.
